It is an ancient 5 days Hindu festival of light celebrated in the month of October or November depends on the Hindu lunar calendar, the word Diwali means rows of lighted lamps, it is taken from the Sanskrit word Dīpāvalī (दीपावली) which means rows of light or spreading of light. It is rejoiced as the victory of light over darkness, conquest of Good over the evil.

 

It is considered as New Year by Hindus, it is also rejoiced for the reason that Lord Ram ended the evil reign of demon king Ravana to take back his loving wife Lady Sita who was kidnapped by the demon king using a camouflage of golden deer.

On this occasion across the country houses is cleaned, renovated and decorated by various artistic lights and other prettifying pieces to make it as marvelous as it can be possible. Also on this festival a salute is paid to Lakshmi the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, by en lighting the lamps outside of their home and with colors many beautiful designs known as Rangoli is created near the entrance to home.

As it is festival of light people burst crackers in the open and sweets and gifts are exchanged. It is the most celebrated festival across the country, not only in India but there is public holidays in the Malaysia,Singapore, Myanmar ,Nepal, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Tobago, Fiji, and Guyana.

It is a 5 days festival, each day is celebrated in a different ways. This is how each day of  holy festival of light  is celebrated:

first day is called “Dhan Teras“, on this day houses are cleansed and holy water from river Ganga is sprung over the home for purifying and welcoming of the Goddess of wealth, on this day Gold is bought and is considered very auspicious to buy gold on this day.

Second day is known as “Kali Chaudas” or “Narak Chaturdasi“, in some parts of India it is considered as Choti Diwali, It is believed that on this day Lord Krishna ended the life of demon Narkasur. It is advised to apply some oil and take deep relaxing bath to free from all the sins and get ready to celebrate the Diwali and home coming of the lord Rama with Lady Sita and brother Laxman back from the exile, after killing the Ravana. It is also said that one should not light the lamps that night and even not go outside without any urgent work and stay at home and relax.

Third day is well known as the “Diwali/ Deepavali” on this day Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped along with the lord Ganesha for removing the obstacles from their life. Crackers are lighted up and sky looks so beautiful on this very night with dazzling fire crackers.

Fourth day is celebrated in various ways around the states of the India, In Gujarat it is seen as the New Year, and famously knows an “Bestu Varas”, People greet each other with well wishes,sweets and gifts are exchanged. In northern states of India it is celebrated as Govardhan pooja, Vishwakarma day. This day is also called “Annakut”.

     

Fifth day is called as “Bhai Beej“, On this day sisters invite their brothers  for a special feast which includes the offering of their favorite dish and in return brother assures to protect the sister against all possible harm.

On this year of 2016 Diwali is celebrated on the date:  30th October 2016.
